The Wellington Film Society Monday 24 November, 6.15pm at the Paramount - final film of the year - M (Fritz Lang, Germany 1931, restored 2003). Harrowing melodrama about a psychotic child murderer brought to justice by the Berlin underworld. It is riveting, frighteningly contemporary and cinematically dazzling, especially for an early sound film. Peter Lorre's performance is unforgettable - an outwardly gentle man who is trapped by his mental sickness and afraid to discover himself.
Members only, but 12-month and 3-film memberships available at the door.
The NZ Film Archive's Mediatheatre, 84 Taranaki Street. The NZ Feature on Wednesday is Bruce Morrison's QUEEN CITY ROCKER (1987). For details of all Mediaplex events check the Archive's events calendar

IRINA PALM -
Marianne Faithfull is unforgettable as a middle-class, middle-aged frump who takes a job at a sex club in order to raise enough money for her grandson's life-saving operation. Mixing pathos and comedy expertly, it shows a knowing hand in scenes involving stuffy Little England villagers and the cynical operators of the sex business in London's Soho.
REEL EARTH FILM FESTIVAL -
Being held as a fundraiser for Forest and Bird and all profits will go to the Places for Penguins project, making sure that little blue penguins on the Wellington coast will always have a home to go to. The "Website" link goes to the official site.
CARAMEL -
As the name suggests this is a sweet affair, hiding any bitter undertones under a sprightly, glistening exterior. Five women around a Beirut beauty salon address a range of issues facing Lebanese women - from extramarital affairs to religious dictates. From the Wellington Film Festival.
THE SAVAGES -
Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman are a dream pairing for this dark comedy-drama about siblings dealing with a sickly father. Observant drama and humour follow, although the downbeat script never reaches the excellence of its lead performers.
From the Wellington Film Festival.
Also Lighthouse Petone.
MY BEST FRIEND'S GIRL -
Kate Hudson loosens her wholesome screen image a notch in her latest star vehicle, a racy comedy, which aims to be tasteless (it often is) and romantic (it mostly isn’t). There are no surprises here, but speedy pacing and a smattering of laughs along the way.
Also Regent on Manners, all Readings, Skycity and Ascot.
YUVVRAAJ -
A Bollywood film by Subhash Ghai. Set in Europe in modern times, its about the three sons of a billionaire father brought up in three different environments, their individual personalities, their passion and aggression to fulfill their aspirations. No Reviews. Opens Friday.
